#4: The “5:01” Hard Cutoff
Back in the pre-smart phone era, work was separate from home life. At 5:01 PM you could ditch the office without a worry in the world. There was no need to be connected to check an email or chat apps, your evenings were yours. The commute was a time to relax, to read a book, or to have a good conversation with a neighbor. These rituals of leaving work at work seem weird now, replaced by the expectation that we are always connected.
