#7: Woolly bear colors reveal the coming winter
Autumn used to produce a wonderfully fuzzy seasonal forecast in parts of North America. Find a woolly bear caterpillar, examine the width of its reddish-brown middle band, and supposedly you could tell whether winter would be mild or severe. A narrow brown meant a hard winter; a wide band promised something gentler. Entire festivals grew around the tradition.
