Before every model had a million followers, there were faces in the magazines. The women in the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, or Life were impossibly elegant. If we think about it, unlike movie stars, their fame was attached to the page. When the photo shoots ended and they stepped away from the camera, many simply returned to private life, leaving us with not much more than a beautiful photograph and an almost name. #1: Dovima (Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba)
In 1955, Richard Avedon captured Dovima in a black Dior gown, standing between two elephants, and it still is one of the most famous fashion pictures ever taken. Born in 1927, she was Avedon’s muse, a woman with a very dramatic grace. She defined the high-fashion look of the time, and then, in the early 1960s, she decided she was done.
