#21: China Machado
China Machado, born in Shanghai, had a look so unique that it broke barriers. In 1959, at the urging of her friend Richard Avedon, Harper’s Bazaar made her the first non-white model to appear on the cover of a major American fashion magazine. While she stepped back from full-time modeling for a while to work as a fashion editor, she never truly left. She returned to modeling in her later years.
