What to Put In your Backpack for Hiking

January 15, 2023 by Sara Davies

Nothing beats the feeling of being out in nature, taking in all the sights and sounds. But if you’re planning a hike, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need with you. A well-stocked backpack is essential for any successful hike.

Packing smart can help ensure that your trek is safe and enjoyable. Knowing what items are necessary for a day on the trail will help keep your load light while still having all the essentials to enjoy your time outdoors. Here’s a guide of what to put in your backpack when hiking so you can be prepared for whatever comes up!

Water: The most important item to bring on a hike is plenty of water. Make sure you have enough for the duration of your hike, plus extra in case of emergencies. Pack a reusable water bottle or canteen and be sure to stay hydrated throughout your trek.

Food: Hiking can be strenuous, so it’s important to stay fueled. Pack snacks that are high in protein and carbohydrates such as nuts and granola bars. Also make sure to bring some energizing snacks like dark chocolate or fruit to give yourself a boost when needed.

First Aid kit: Accidents can happen while out on the trail, so it’s essential to pack a first aid kit with basic supplies like bandages, gauze and antiseptic wipes. Don’t forget to include any prescription medications you may need.

Map: Having a map is the best way to make sure you stay on the right path and don’t get lost in unfamiliar terrain. Be sure to pack a paper or digital version of the area you plan to explore.

Sun Protection: Protect yourself from harmful UV rays with sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Also consider bringing chapstick with SPF protection for your lips!

Extra Clothes: Pack an extra layer of clothes in case of unpredictable weather conditions or sudden temperature changes throughout the day. Bring along a pair of gloves if you plan to do some rock-climbing or if you’re expecting cold temperatures.

Flashlight: Visibility can quickly become compromised in unfamiliar terrain, so bringing a flashlight is a must. A headlamp is especially useful for hands-free visibility when exploring at night.

Safety Whistle: In case of an emergency, having a whistle on hand can be the difference between safety and danger. The sound of a whistle can carry much farther than your voice and its repeated blasts are recognized as an international distress signal.

Insect Repellent: It’s always good to keep some bug spray handy while hiking to protect yourself from pesky bugs and insects. Be sure to research any local wildlife you might encounter before heading out!

The great outdoors is full of adventure and exploration, but it’s important to be prepared before heading out on a hike. A well-stocked backpack is essential for any successful hike, and knowing what to pack can help make sure your journey is safe and enjoyable. Water, food, a first aid kit, a map, sun protection, extra clothes, a flashlight and a safety whistle are all must-have items to bring along with you.
