Once widespread across much of the Midwest and eastern United States, the rusty patched bumblebee declined because of habitat loss, disease, and pesticide exposure. When it received federal endangered species protection in 2017, developers had to begin considering pollinator habitat during certain residential projects. Plans may require surveys for nesting areas, preservation of flowering vegetation, or landscaping designed to provide food throughout the growing season. These adjustments can alter parking lots, building footprints, and maintenance practices in ways that would once have seemed unrelated to wildlife conservation.
