Breaking Some Laws
It is easy to imagine that the flight that Walters took in his lawn chair up, up, and away might have been entertaining, but it is safe to say that it was in no way authorized by the rules.
As a result, in accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations of the United States, Walters was in violation of a number of laws when he took off in his aircraft, including operating an unlicensed aircraft and entering an airport area without permission or prior communication.
Walters was given a monetary penalty of $4,000, which is equivalent to approximately about $11,000 in today’s currency. However, he filed an appeal and was successful in reducing the fine to $1,500—although this is still quite a substantial sum, equivalent to about $4,000 in today’s currency.
