#19: Telegraph Operator
When Samuel Morse introduced his telegraph system during the 1840s, a new profession soon emerged across railroads, newspapers, businesses, and government offices. Women learned Morse code and transmitted messages that could cross hundreds of miles in only minutes, something almost unimaginable at the time. The role demanded concentration since even small errors could modify the meaning of a message. Telephone networks expanded throughout the 20th century, followed by computers and email, making telegraph operators increasingly unnecessary.
