Groundhog Day’s Trailer Made the Audience Feel Dumb by Explaining the Entire Plot
Comedy films usually have a more difficult time being marketed than other genres. The assumption is that if the trailer has plenty of jokes, then the film will be funny – however, this isn’t always the case. Often, people laugh at a joke in the trailer only to hear it again later in the movie and not find it amusing. Groundhog Day was especially guilty of this flaw.
The Trailer essentially discloses all the good jokes of the movie, making it seem like the entire film will be a slapstick comedy. Even the voice-overs are revealing crucial plot points, such as that Bill Murray’s character can relive February 2 endlessly without any consequences but also has to “put things right” with his primary love interest.
