We’re kicking off a new series we like to call, “The Year You Were Born,” where we dive deep into all things pop culture, decade by decade! We’ve landed square inside the swingin’ sixties, and are looking at the films you know and love that celebrated their debut between 1960 and 1969. The sixties really were a golden era for classic cinema, with ample proof in the following slides. And though we’re particularly a fan of Julie Andrews, the cast list is positively star-studded. Of course, we couldn’t list every movie from the decade. Which ones did we leave out that you believe are classic icons from this bygone era?
#1: Psycho (1960)
It may not be well known, but the film that is now regarded as director Alfred Hitchcock’s most iconic work was shot on a pretty tight budget. Without getting into too many of the gory details, let’s just say that chocolate syrup was a particularly in-demand prop for one of this black-and-white film’s most memorable scenes. Winning an Oscar for Hitchcock and his Best Supporting Actress, Janet Leigh, Psycho redefined film as it was known back then, making some of the more sordid and sultry themes present in the story more acceptable for filmmaking moving forward.
