#14: Four Different Directors
The production of the classic film encountered a remarkable shift in directorial leadership. Initially, Norman Taurog started as the first director but was replaced after just a few days of shooting. George Cukor then took the helm, primarily focusing on character development and rehearsals. However, Victor Fleming became the primary director responsible for bringing the beloved story to life on screen when he took over.
Despite this transition, King Vidor briefly stepped in to cover his absence when Fleming was called away to direct another film. This extraordinary chain of directorial changes made the making of The Wizard of Oz a complex and multifaceted process. Yet, it ultimately resulted in one of the most enduring and beloved films in cinematic history, thanks to these four directors’ combined efforts and creativity.
