Most Secluded Cities to Visit

November 11, 2021 by Molly Hart

Visiting a new place usually involves enjoyable activities with family and friends, but it can also be a time to learn about the different cultures in a new area. If you are looking for some places to visit that are off the beaten path, here’s our list of 15 most secluded cities around the world:

1. Zihautanejo, Mexico

Zihautanejo is a small city in the Mexican state of Guerrerroo, with a population of around 55,000.  It is located 100 kilometers away from the state capital of Neuvo Léon and 220 kilometers away from Mexico City.  This lovely coastal city has some beautiful beaches that are clean and mostly empty during most parts of the year.

2. Santa Rosa, Argentina

Santa Rosa is a small city of around 10,000 residents located 600 kilometers from Buenos Aires.  It’s mostly secluded because it is surrounded by forests and hills that make it difficult to explore by foot or bike.  Another reason why this place is left off the beaten path is because most travelers usually pass through here on their way to El Calafate.

3. Matera, Italy

Matera is a city in the Basilicata region of Italy with a population of around 60,000.  It is located between Rome and Naples, making it a great pit stop on your way to either place.  If you’re tired of crowded touristy places and prefer to explore secluded historical towns, this city is for you.  It’s best enjoyed on foot because most of the roads are secluded in narrow alleys that are perfect for photoshoots.

4. Ribeira Sacra, Lugo, Spain

Ribeira Sacra is a region located in Lugo, 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Lugo.  This place is well known for its historical, cultural, and natural assets.  Mostly a rural region, you’ll find stunning churches and monasteries as well as some old towns on your road trip here.

5. Giethoorn, Netherlands

Giethoorn is a small village of around 2,300 residents located in the eastern part of the Netherlands.  It is surrounded by canals and it’s often called “Little Venice” because of its unique design.  On your way to this secluded place, you will pass through meadows and fruit plantations that make the place even more beautiful.

6. Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor is a small city located in the Bay of Kotor, otherwise known as Boka Kotorska.  The bay has been inhabited since 3000 BC and it’s often mentioned in Greek mythology. If you’re looking for some quiet time away from tourists, this place will surely make your stay an unforgettable experience.

7. Merida, Mexico

In conclusion, if you want to experience a different side of life and immerse yourself in seclusion and beauty, these most secluded cities will surely make your trip worthwhile.
