Sometimes (most of the time), when a television show is ultra-successful, executives want to ride the wave by continuing the story with a spin-off show. It doesn’t always work. While some spin-offs like Young Sheldon or Fraiser end up being wildly successful, some don’t have the same success, and it makes it even more awkward when spin-offs crash and burn. They can’t all be winners, though. Here are 20 shows that simply could not hold up to the originals.
#1: Joey
Following the success of Friends, Joey Tribbiani received his own spin-off after the original series ended. Friends aired from 1994 to May 2004, while Joey (starring Matt LeBlanc) premiered in September 2004. It was focused on Joey trying to make it in Hollywood, leaving the other five friends back in New York City. Unfortunately, something about it just didn’t work. Partway through season two, the show was put on hiatus, and only one more episode aired before NBC canceled it because of low ratings. There were a total of 46 episodes.
