They Pose a Serious Threat to Our Ecosystem
With a footprint that looms large over the environment, cruise ships have long been recognized as major culprits in environmental degradation. Their notoriety stems largely from their usage of a particular type of fuel, colloquially known as “bunker fuel,” which is laden with sulfur content over 5,000 times that of conventional gasoline. This stark figure underscores the significant environmental havoc wreaked by these floating cities. However, in a promising shift, recent years have seen several cruise lines take steps towards mitigating their impact, notably by equipping their vessels with advanced filtration systems to curtail harmful emissions.
Cruise liners, with their myriad of onboard luxuries, are believed to be the largest annual contributors to carbon dioxide emissions compared to other maritime vessels. This is primarily attributed to the continuous operation of numerous amenities on these floating resorts.
