Worst Foods to Bring Backpacking

December 18, 2022 by Sara Davies

Going on a backpacking trip is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy nature. However, if you’re not careful, you can easily pack too much food and end up carrying around a lot of extra weight. In this blog post, we will discuss the worst foods to bring with you on your next backpacking trip.

The first food to avoid bringing backpacking is canned goods. While cans are convenient because they don’t require refrigeration, they can be extremely heavy and take up a lot of precious space in your backpack. Instead, opt for vacuum sealed or dried foods which weigh much less.

Another food to avoid on the trail is anything containing dairy products. Cheese, yogurt, and milk all require refrigeration and will spoil quickly if not kept cold. It’s best to stick with dehydrated snacks like trail mix or beef jerky that don’t need any special care.

Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, and lunch meat also do not do well without proper storage conditions, so those should be avoided when backpacking. Stick with proteins that won’t spoil quickly such as canned tuna, peanut butter, or sunflower seeds.

Lastly, avoid bringing any foods with a high fat content. While fats are an essential part of our diets, they can also make us feel sluggish and weighed down while on the trail. Instead of packing chips or cookies loaded with fats and sugar, opt for healthier snacks like granola bars or energy bars.

Backpacking trips are all about being prepared but not overburdened. To help ensure your next backpacking trip is a success, be sure to leave these worst foods at home! With careful planning and smart packing choices, you’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors without worrying about extra weight or spoiled food.
