Following the bizarre babies category, here we have an insane Caesarean section! First off, we can’t help but mention the women’s facial expressions. The one on the right looks surprised by the water she’s pouring. The matron that’s taking the baby out is looking up and probably thinking, “Is it time for lunch already? I’m starving!”
The baby being born—a boy, apparently—has a similar expression, indicating he’s as hungry as the matron. In all seriousness, although today we see C-sections being done all the time, it wasn’t so simple back then. Mothers would face imminent death if they had to undergo that kind of surgery, which probably explains the mother’s dying expression in the painting.
