First introduced in England during the 13th century, stagecoaches became popular for traveling long distances. They stayed in use for centuries after that, though with the invention of the railway in the 1830s, their use slowly began to dwindle.
It was all but gone by the 1900s but lasted in more remote parts of Europe until as late as the 1960s. The last service stopped in 1961, the same year Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken, was introduced as a doll line. It’s a shame, too; maybe if he’d tried employing a stagecoach in the newest Barbie movie, he could have won her heart.
