Maintaining Mental Stability
There are certain people who are not cut out to go without any form of communication with the outside world for a period of time ranging from many weeks to even months. There are times when sailors who serve on submarines are unable to bear the stress and strain of their work, despite the fact that they undergo intensive training and are subjected to stringent selection procedures.
In the event that something like this takes place on board the submarine, the medical officer has the right to administer sedatives to the sailor in question and place them in solitary confinement. When we say that they are confined, what we really mean is that they are kept under supervision in the living quarters.
