Well, at least I can rest assured this isn’t an American set-up. According to my research, 999 is used in many countries. BBC America gives us the history behind it: “The number was first introduced in 1937 in central London, following an incident where a resident of Wimpole Street had tried to call the fire brigade about a nearby inferno in which lives were lost, but the caller had been held in a queue by the operator.”
It seems to me like history would be repeating itself if you ended up on this phone during an emergency, which makes this even weirder. They already knew this was an issue; why would they recreate it? Someone has some serious explaining to do. I hope this never happens to you!
