It was in 1933 that Marlene Dietrich landed in paris, France, after flying across the Atlantic with her husband for a vacation. During that time period, Dietrich’s style reflected the changing fashions for women, including her fierce suit, short hair, and shoes. She arrived in Paris at a time when women in France were prohibited from wearing pants by law.
According to an urban legend, Dietrich was detained, but the story has since been disproved as untrue. In the meantime, France’s ban on women “dressing like men” was overturned in 2013, but not until then.
