The Black and White Ball: New York and the whole world’s finest were in attendance
The New York Times considered the Black and White Ball as “The best party ever.” Truman Capote, the author of “In Cold Blood,” held this momentous gathering to celebrate his book’s success. Some of the most renowned people from all over converged in New York City at Plaza Hotel on November 28, 1966 – 540 guests total.
No one had ever seen such a wild party before – celebrities were drinking and dancing nonstop. According to Capote, it was a “little masked ball for Kay Graham and all of my friends.” This party brought together people like Andy Warhol, Frank Sinatra, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the Italian princess Luciana Pignatelli. The party was full of people from all social backgrounds, mixing and talking with each other. Even European aristocrats were seen mingling with authors, Hollywood actors, and middle-class citizens. The party has been written about in a book and replicated many times.
