Le Bal Oriental: The party of the century
There were as many socialites at Carlos de Beistegui’s Le Bal Oriental party as there were to be seen in that era. The party, which was held in Venice on September 3, 1951, has been dubbed the “party of the century.” Beistegui went above and beyond to make sure his party was unforgettable. It was also the first party and social gathering of its kind since World War II.
Some of the most elite members of high society were invited to the party, including Aga Khan III, Orson Welles, Cecil Beaton, and the Duchess of Devonshire. Guests were told to dress in the theme of The Banquet of Cleopatra. Arriving by gondola, guests were greeted by a host wearing 16-inch platform heels. The party was scheduled to end at 6 am. Wigs and costumes emulating different empires were worn by many guests. Dior, upcoming designer Pierre Cardin, and Nina Ricci’s designs could also be seen among revelers.
