Tekh Festival: Ancient Egyptians liked to drink
As its name would suggest, this festival is all about drinking alcohol! Egyptians celebrated many different festivals throughout the year to celebrate various gods and goddesses. The Tekh festival was a celebration that everyone enjoyed, regardless of social class. They would consume large amounts of alcohol on this day and often pass out, paying homage to when Hathor, aka “The Lady of Drunkenness,” almost destroyed mankind but was saved by beer.
The “Festival of Drunkenness” got its name from the huge amounts of alcohol that would flow into the streets during this event. This festival began in the Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 BCE), where people would get drunk and sleep as a way to connect with the goddess. They would then be woken up by drums.
