16: Longchamps
Longchamps was founded in 1919, and it opened its first location in New York City. The restaurants were famous for their décor, using natty art deco decorations and furnishing by Winold Reiss. There was also art by Ely Jacques Kahn, one of the most famous architects in NYC history (he founded the art deco movement).
In the early sixties, Longchamps made history as the only restaurant to serve complementary Metrecal at lunch. The chain also was famous for serving specialties like Crabmeat a la Dewey, 21% Butterfat Ice Cream, Oxtail Ragout, Nesselrode Pie, and other unique specialties. It had about 20 restaurants at its peak.
