Suppose you learn a language passively by growing up speaking it. In that case, there’s a lot of grammar and vocabulary that you just pick up through exposure without ever understanding the rationale behind it. I began to realize all the things about my native tongue that I had never paid attention to when I started learning German.
So you might think you hear a popular phrase like “make ends meet” and not question it. You come up with a reason in your head for why that particular praise would be phrased that way and then just go along with it. I have to say, this person’s explanation is completely plausible.
