As A Horseman, He Was A Master
“The finest horseman of the era” was a phrase coined by Thomas Jefferson. He’d had a lifetime fascination with horses since he was a child. Washington was always on top of his horses’ health, and he made sure that they were well cared for. At the age of 14, he jotted down a memory in his diary of riding a horse over a river in Maryland.
During the Revolutionary War, he received Nelson and Blueskin, two of the most beloved horses of his lifetime. When the battle was done, Washington took them both back to Mount Vernon to live with his wife and children.
