Historians praise James K. Polk’s foresight and initiative. Under his leadership, the U.S. extended to the Pacific coast. Polk was able to boost the military might of the United States by focusing on building additional railways. By the time he left the White House, the United States had become a formidable military power.
After his first term in office, Polk decided not to run for re-election. He acquired a property on the Atlantic Coast two years ago, where he hoped to spend the rest of his life in tranquility. Polk died of cholera not long after settling into his new home, which was named for him.
