Sponges; Under Glaciers
Anytime scientists start drilling in Antarctica, it seems like humanity discovers another species of organism that beats all the odds in surviving the harshest weather conditions. Biologists were drilling into an artic sea shelf when their drill met a bolder, meaning they could go through to study the deepest depths of the ice.
However, what these scientists found instead shocked them: organisms thriving nearly 3,000 feet below the ice surface. This discovery was startling for scientists because they still don’t understand how sponges could survive without access to sunlight or nutrients. As a result, some researchers have started to rethink the conditions necessary for life on other planets.
