Necessary Women
This work was formerly widespread and, like the name implies, predominantly done by women. “Necessary women” were responsible for cleaning the chamber pots that were filled with waste, which is no surprise. Indeed necessary!
The women were exhausted after their long, physical labor of manually cleaning waste pots. This duty was no longer required when the colonial period produced indoor restrooms and the flushing technique.
