District of Columbia – Ancient Military Monument
The Tripoli Monument, the state’s first military monument, is shown in this old photograph from the 1850s. The memorial was carved in Italy in 1806 to commemorate US Navy Veterans who had fought during the First Barbary War.
The monument was moved to the Washington Navy Yard following its completion, but it was relocated to the Capitol in 1831. The statue was taken to Annapolis, Maryland, in 1850 and installed at the United States Naval Academy.
